The 2025 Chevy Equinox vs. The Mazda CX-5

Is the Chevy Equinox a Better Choice than the Mazda CX-5?

There's a problem with the Chevy Equinox-but it's a good problem to have. Once you buy yours, you'll have to fend off your spouse to keep them away from the keys. You'll have to redirect your newly licensed teen to their cash car instead of your driver's seat. And you'll have to limit the in-laws to one joyride a week. The new Chevy Equinox is appealing to all generations for more than one reason. Let's see if the new Mazda CX-5 can hold a candle to the Equinox's flame. Here's how the two compare.

Exterior Design and Attractiveness

Chevy Equinox

Something that's appealing to all generations has to be attractive to all generations. And saying that you want a vehicle that looks good isn't a vain thing to say. Because style matters. So, the Chevy Equinox capitalizes with LED headlamps, available fog lights, and multiple grille options. Want a bigger footprint? Add the available 20-inch machined wheels. Looking for a way to stand out? The two-tone paint options separate you from other bland Mazda CX-5s in Parsippany, Montville, and the surrounding areas.

Mazda CX-5

The Mazda CX-5 isn't flashy. It's the outfit you'd wear to an opera. The honeycomb front grille design is enigmatic, and the bright LED headlights are coupled with an angular front-end design that prioritizes astute over style. The standard 17-inch wheels blend in with the crowd, while the available 19-inch wheels can't quite match up to the 20-inch wheels on the Equinox.

Fuel Economy and Performance

Chevy Equinox

The sole powertrain is a 1.5-liter turbocharged 4-cylinder engine with 175 horsepower. It's more than enough power to merge into traffic and safely get up to speed. But fuel economy is the main draw. Your Equinox delivers an EPA-estimated 26/28 MPG city/highway on FWD models. Each trim can also run on E15 fuel-a more cost-effective unleaded fuel that's environmentally friendly. AWD is optional on all trims, while MacPherson front suspension and the multi-mode drive selector are standard.

Mazda CX-5

The Mazda CX-5 offers an equally powerful, 2.5-liter engine with 187 horsepower and an EPA-estimated 26/31 MPG city/highway. That's right on par with what Equinox offers. However, the CX-5 has an available turbocharged 2.5-liter engine with up to 256 horsepower. Drivers will unlock this powertrain with a climb to one of the highest trim levels. In addition, the added power will reduce fuel economy to an EPA-estimated 22/27 MPG city/highway. Like the Equinox, AWD is available on all trims.

Interior Comfort and Technology

Chevy Equinox

When you're cruising in a modern SUV, connectivity matters. So, the Equinox delivers a standard 11-inch diagonal driver information center and an 11.3-inch color LCD with built-in Google and Apple and Android compatibility. The Wi-Fi hotspot also comes standard and provides top-tier connectivity. You can check work emails while waiting in the kid's carpool lane, stream shows on your lunch, or let the kids ride to their favorite Disney tunes in Wayne, NJ.

The Mazda CX-5's offers a variety of trims-which means if you want a fully-loaded model, you'll have to pay a lot more (more than $42,000). Across all models, you'll find a smaller 10.25-inch full-color infotainment screen with Apple and Android compatibility-almost an inch less screen than the Equinox. However, we will admit that the CX-5 does offer premium (yet pricey) upgrades.

Driver's Assistance and Safety

Chevy Equinox

The Equinox brings an array of driver's assistance and safety features as standard for all models. Accident-prevention technology like forward collision alert and rear parking assistance keep you aware of all obstacles. Basic features, like the child LATCH system, safety locks, multiple airbags, and occupant presence detection, ensure that your passengers are safe and secure.

Mazda CX-5

The Mazda CX-5 mimics the Equinox with its standard features. Each model will house a LATCH system, multiple airbags, and anti-lock brakes, as well as a handful of alert systems designed to minimize potential accidents. Alerts like blind spot monitoring and lane-keep assist will round out the entry-level safety features, while upgrades like parking sensors come at higher trim levels.

It's appealing to multiple generations, and for a fully loaded model, you'll only pay around $34,000 to have a fully loaded model. And that's before available new vehicle promotions. The Equinox's flame is too hot for the CX-5. Compare Equinox trims and snag the one that checks all of your boxes.
